Mr. Jols
« on: June 26, 2018, 02:45:24 PM »
I've chased him most of my life out here, and I've caught him a few times for other Takers in my crews.  Helped him become a reality for a few other teams, and pointed people towards him when they were looking for a risk.

Here's a few things I've learned.

*50% of Takers won't come back.
Put your affairs in order before you go.  Hope you win that coin toss, but make sure your loved ones are ready in case you don't

*No plan survives meeting Mr Jols
Anticipate everything going pear shaped and have a contingency plan.  And another.  And another.  And maybe one more.  Don't taunt Murphy, but figure that he's crashing the party later.  Basically, plan for "It might not go according to plan" all the way down to "Well, *this* is a clusterfuck we ain't surviving."

*Jols will bring out the green in your friend's eyes.
A three-way split means a bigger share than a four-way.  A Two-way split is even better.  And all is better than half.  Of the five times I've managed to catch Jols, two have devolved into four-way firefights at the end because someone got that idea and thought the rest of us were out of ammo.  Take my advice, save a clip for that moment when your "friend" gets greedy.

Any other help for catching that bastard?  There's other veteran Takers out there that've caught him, I'm sure; let's pass that knowledge on to the newbies.

If you've caught JOLS Mauve then are you still living that Loss life or you found refuge?

Livin' in the Loss, Varl.  I keep a gun on my person at all times, I twitch at any little noise, and I know within the first five minutes of meeting a person what the odds are of me eventually shooting that person in the face.  I am not exactly Recession material anymore.

On the other hand, every time I catch Jols I get better at doing all the Taker things.  Jols buys new volumes for my shelves every time, upgrades my gear, and pays for a replacement Therapist because I broke the last one...

You know.  The usual.

I'm actually amazed at the fact you've survived five JOLS.

How would you recommend finding the target for Mr or Miss JOLS without other interested parties finding out?

Best answer I can give on this one is in the question "Why hasn't anyone chased this score yet?"
If the answer is "Because it's dangerous to go to XXXX and attempt to XXXX" then expect that the survivability ratio is going to slip towards 75/25 with more death being likely.  If the answer is "Because you need to know about XXXX and luckily Bob is a XXXX so we have an expert who can figure it out" you're more likely to walk away from it with Bounty.

We had an architect who knew which architectural finds would bring profit; that one succeeded.

We chased an infamous killer who'd acquired a contract on his head by killing two whole Enclaves; two of us came back.

We went to a seed vault that one of our horticulturists knew about and brought rare strains back to the Enclave; that one succeeded.

We traveled to a warehouse on a fault line to retrieve rare materials before it was swallowed by the Earth; three came back, under the forecasted loot, and suddenly there was a shootout.

Last one was a casino that had been the site of a huge convention.  Lots of Casualties, lots of Bounty to be had because ID needed to get in; I got out in the end because I figured on Murphy at the start.  It went south, but we had enough to cover all of our expenses.  Once I saw the barricades start to buckle, I told the team it was time to leave- one listened, so she and I got out.  The others bet they had enough ammo to hold back the horde; they lost.

I don't buy it, nobody catches Deathwish JOLS, let alone multiple times.

I ain't selling it, Blue. Believe me, don't believe me; one way has you taking good advice for catching Jols one day, the other does not.

I hope you succeed in all you do, be the best medic a Taker team has ever seen. I hope you find a crew that'll have your back when the chips are down, and that you'll make it through with only bruises to your psyche instead of the cracks and crumbles so many Takers end up with.

And I hope you catch Jols when you're ready for him. When that time comes, I hope you remember these pointers.

I heard about a group out of Tombstone that did their JOLS and then did another and then a third. not sure why they were so so motivated to die, but ive not heard anything about them in over a year now. ether they finally got enough and settled down some place or well we all know that alternatives to success.

There's a group up north, Freelance.  They're less of a Taker group and more of a Taker conglomerate; they've got a revolving crew with members jumping in and out as the job demands.  From what I hear, several have chased Jols and caught him.

There's at least a few who've done multiple runs.  Survivors tend to keep surviving.

Survivors tend to keep surviving.

up until the point they become Ex-Survivors. a key point is knowing when to cut out and settle down.
